Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z Preview | VGU

"Talk about one game I was really looking forward to. Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is a spin-off of the original Ninja Gaiden series. It keeps the same gameplay style but changes everything else from the main character, to the storyline, to even the enemies you face. Can Yaiba reign supreme in comparison to classic Ninja Gaiden or will it be taken by the zombie horde before its release? Let us draw our swords and find out."

| First Impressions: Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z Covers Us in Zombie Blood - Push Square

Push Square: "The weird Ninja Gaiden spin-off that is Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z surprised us during a recent hands-on. For a series that's always been known for its gory disposition, it feels like proceedings may have gone a little bit overboard, with so much blood and mutilation that we found it difficult to discern what was even happening on screen. Think Dynasty Warriors, only if every Chinese soldier that you smacked around the face exploded into a mess of entrails when defeated."

Save/Continue writes:
"Decked out in some fancy cel-shaded threads with more than a passing whiff of grindhouse about it, if you didnt see the title you would perhaps be forgiven for thinking that Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z had nothing to do with the Ninja Gaiden franchise at all.
The result is a game that looks nothing like the franchise from which it draws the same name and one which trades the hardcore difficulty of the franchise for accessibility and style in spades."

| Hands-On Preview: Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z - Electronic Theatre

Many gamers think that Tecmo Koei Europes strategy this generation revolved around their three core franchises, wheeling out endless sequels and revisions. While its true that the Warriors, Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden branding has fallen upon dozens of titles there has been startling amounts of innovation and attempts to redefine genre within and around. From the underappreciated Warriors: Legends of Troy and Trinity: Souls of Zill Oll to the criminally ignored Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War and Undead Knights, there have been moments which deserved far greater recognition than they received. Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is destined to become another misunderstood title, with many attributing the tagline to it being another Ninja Gaiden and not truly giving it the opportunity to stand on its own two feet.

| Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z has just hit the top of my "do want" list | Digitally Downloaded

Digitally Downloaded writes: "I played for five minutes, put the controller down, pulled out my phone and navigated over to Wikipedia. I just could not believe that Goichi Suda wasn't involved in this game. And he isn't, but it still surprises me that he isn't. From that moment on I was interested; its fair to say of all the Japanese developers out there Suda is the one I respect most for his taste in surrealism and subversive art, and any game that is able to successfully emulate what Suda does has my undivided attention."

Yamilia from Twinfinite writes: "I had no idea what this game was as I previewed Ryse: Son of Rome and looked to my left to see Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z in its bloody glory. Intrigued, I lined up once again to check out this mystery title. Turns out, youre playing as an antagonist from the Ninja Gaiden series on a vengeful quest against Ryu Hayabusa. You fight through hordes of zombies with simple controls that you can pick up and understand immediately. Theyre aiming for a very ridiculous game with Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z as itll have you doing a variety of over-the-top things, from ripping out zombie arms and using them as nun chucks, to throwing a zombie in a truck to break into a panty shop. Its set for early 2014 release in Japan on the Xbox 360, PS3, and iOS."
